A
personal message from the District Governor - to all Lion Leaders of 20S:
Pick your battles and you shall
win. Your destiny and the impact your Lions club can have on your community rests with you. The ultimate success and failures
will be defined by the series of choices that you will make. Yogi Berra said … “when you come to the fork in
the road take it”… It’s up to us, whether left or right.
I’ve learned that you
sometimes cannot waste your time engaging in petty conflicts that don’t matter. There will always be critics. There
will always be a naysayer, but your leadership will define the character of your club.
OK, it’s a volunteer thing,
not a life style, not an obsession, not a 24/7 occupation, but the time spent on Lionism, is quality time, that you sacrifice
for the greater good of those in need in your community. Will it make you money? No! BUT, it will make you friends;
it will make you sleep easier at night knowing you’ve had a positive impact on another human being, and the priceless
heart felt moments you experience will endure for a lifetime.
3 - Special hints to grow your club for
the month:
Build membership: Sponsor a Lions Monday night football night every Monday night in October at a local sports pub, invite club members
to bring potential new members that night as their guests. It’s a great way to get out of the house & have
some fun, (Example, some clubs arrange with the local pub to have a few trays of food and tap beer for a $20 charge pp, wrist
bands or stamp to identify) a great meet and greet night to increase membership.
Create Awareness: Print 11 X 17 Lions place mats, to be given out to local eateries for the holidays, encouraging your clubs
holiday food & toy donations, or support the troops program, etc. Free advertisement, and the eateries like being a part
of the Lions charity initiative, ask them to be drop off point for additional involvement, (and membership) I have samples
available if you like.
Collect ‘Free’ Holiday Donations: Invite local business owners and the more affluent members in
your zip code to a Lions “No Show – Holiday Party” asking them not to come, just send a gift, to support
a family for the holidays with food and gifts, toys for needy kids, etc. Bulk mail an official invitation, with return gift
envelope via a mailing list provided by any local mail house. Your net, after costs will amaze you. (The Bay Shore Lions club
nets thousands of dollars for their charity fund every year with this program, I have samples available)
Keep up the good work & thank you for your service, District Governor,
Paul Wernersbach
